Preface
Click here and discover the ancient Ireland
Did you know that Ireland has thousands of castles, tower houses and fortification ruins? This means that you can’t go too far without spotting one.
These astonishing gems are built in enchanted places, on the estuary of rivers or on the tips of hills, beside the sea or in the country side.
They went through glory and decline, they silently witnessed centuries of history, invasions and revolutions, sieges and celebrations, famine and prosperity, to become the magnificent heritages that we can admire today.
Our journey started accidentaly, on a warm summery day of a few years ago, when we stumbled on the ruins of a splendid castle, named Carrigogunnell. It was love at first sight and it inspired our project.
Carrigogunnell is an abandoned ruin, close to the village of Clarina, in County Limerick. It is not just a magnificent medieval fortification. It was built on a strategic position, dominating the valley of the Shannon river and presenting an astonishing view.
A visitor with a good eye sight can even spot from far the towers of Dromore castle, another stunning fortress that we will help you discover later on.
Did you know that Carrigogunnell is also protagonist of the back cover of The unforgettable fire, the U2 album released in 1984?
All these castles have a story to tell and are looking for someone who wants to listen. Hence, let the journey begin and enjoy the discovery of these marvelous places. Get lost in the magic!
