History

Located near Borrisokane, county Tipperary, Tombrickane Castle is four storeys high tower house probably built during the 15th century by the O’Kennedy [1].
It is difficult to find information on the castle history. According to [2], the name derives from “tomb of St Bricin”. Rory and William Kennedy were listed as proprietors in the Down’s Survey of 1654 [2].
Although it is hard to gather official information on the castle, there are several interesting tales around it. One in particular deserves a mention. A legend says that the castle will collapse when the most beautiful woman in the world will walk by the castle: of course, the fact that it is still there, means that women passing by always follow the suggestion to cover their faces.

Tips

When you picture Ireland in your head, it's likely that one thing comes to mind: castles. Given the huge number of castles, most likely you won't have to spin much around before getting to see one.
That is exactly what happened to us, while driving around the country side in County Tipperary.
It was a warm summer evening, after another busy day in work. Golden hour. In front of us, just on the side of the road, it was standing up tall, a really undeniably awesome castle, the spectacular Tombrickane. One meter tall fence, it didn't bother us at all, so as you can easily imagine, we jumped over it.
Surrounded by a wonderful landscape, the inside of the ruin has such an unusual shape, as some pieces had fallen. Take your time, as there is nobody around to disturb the silence. Take as many pictures as you want of this fascinating place.
