History

Probably built in the second half of the 16th century, there are no records attesting who erected this fortified residence [1, 2]. However, it is known that it belonged to the Devereux family in the 17th century [1, 2].
Coolhull Castle consists of a three-storey rectangular block with a four-storey tower [2]. As stated in [1], the defensive tower, also serving as dungeon according to the medieval architecture, was enriched with more modern features such as musket loops. The visitor can recognize other features, such as crenellations, a bartizan and a murder-hole above the tower entrance [2].
