History

Rockstown Castle (in Irish, Caisleán Bhaile na Carraige) is a ruined 15th-century tower house, located near the village of Ballyneety [1, 2].
Although it is difficult to find online historical details about this castle, interesting architectural details are provided in [3]. Built on a rocky outcrop, Rockstown well survived to the historical events and adverse weather conditions, despite some minor damages on the front side [3]. Although the first floor has collapsed, the staircase allows to reach the higher floors and the top of the castle, from where the visitor can enjoy a breathtaking views over the Limerick countryside, north of Lough Gur [3, 4].
As for many other castles, there is a secret story about Rockstown that we should not tell about [2]. A treasure was hidden under the western window of the castle. It was a matter of fact that local farmers were wealthy and prosperous. This proves that the tale was actually true! But please, for no reason tell this to anyone.

Unexpectedly beautiful!
Rockstown can be visited. We stumbled on it by mistake, while driving around Ballyneety. In order to get in, you will have to walk a beautiful path, passed an entrance gate. You will have to cross a small forest and ramp on a gentle hill. The view from the top of the castle is just breathtaking!. Of course, you can take amazing pictures at sunset but remember: on the way back, you will have to cross the forest again and you might not want to be caught there in dark hours.
