History

It is not easy to find information about Mount Sandford castle. Reported here, there is part of the content of a plate that can be found on site.
The rubble stone gothic folly hidden in the trees was probably built in the late 18th century, perhaps in 1769 [1]. Its large gothic window frames a beautiful view of the Nore and the bridge at Inistioge, where the castle is located. The building has a lower grotto-like level with another gothis arch, with a crudely carved name and date (1765), as the visitor can see in the gallery.

Tips

Located in a forest, the castle is though very easy to reach, as the trail is post signed. You will be amazed by the view. The ten arch bridge and Inistioge village offer such a breathtaking image, through the arcade room of the ruin. Mount Sandford Castle really deserves to be called “a room with a view”, as the information panel says.
